Course Overview 

The Installation Rules Paper 1 online exam preparation course is designed to help you prepare for the national Installation Rules exam. This exam is required as part of the criteria by the Department of Labour to apply to become an installation electrician. The Examination Instruction (IEMIE Syllabus) can be found here. The program content will cover the syllabus as per the Department of Labour syllabus document.


Course Requirements

You will require the following codes that will be referred to during the course:

  • SANS 10142–1: 2020 (Ed3.00)  The wiring of premises Part 1: Low-voltage installations
  • SANS 10198-1: 2004 (Ed.2.0)  The selection, handling and installation of electric power cables of rating not exceeding 33 kV Part 1: Definitions and statutory requirements
  • SANS 10198 – 2: : 2004 (Ed.2.0) The selection, handling and installation of electric power cables of rating not exceeding 33 kV Part 2: Selection of cable type and methods of installation
  • SANS 10292: 2013 (Ed.2.00)  Earthing of low-voltage (LV) distribution systems
  • Occupational Health and Safety Act 

The codes are available from SABS offices or via their website 

The Occupational Health and Safety Act is available for download from the department of Labour website. Alternatively you can buy the printed version of the OHS Act from an educational bookshop or from LexisNexis.


Course Availability

The Installation rules exams are national exams which are written three times per year, normally  in April, July and November. The course  is available three times per year to accommodate for each of the exam dates. They are available for approximately three months leading up to the exam date. Thereafter you will not have access to the course
 After every exam the course availability is closed to allow for course updates.   Thereafter you will not have access to the course. You can enroll for the course at any time, but please ensure that you have sufficient time to complete the course before the exam. Note that you will only receive a certificate of completion if you have completed the entire course. 


Course Cost

This course costs R2 600. No payment plans are available. Payment must be made before you will have access to the course. 


Course Format

The course is 100% online. You will work through the course in your own time and at your own pace. 


Enrollment Options

You can enroll yourself for this course by clicking on "log in" and scrolling down to "create new account". You will then be able to click on the course and make payment using the PayFast gateway. This option allows you to pay via credit/debit card or EFT. You will then have immediate access to the course.

You can also enroll by completing the enrolment form and sending it to info@pandttechnology.co.za. This method is useful if your course is being sponsored by a company and you require an invoice with the company details. Your enrolment details will be sent to you within 48 hours after your payment clears, after which you will have access to the course.

Department of Labour criteria

In order to register with the Department of Labour as a registered person there are certain criteria that needs to be met before application is made to them.

This course enables you to meet one of the Department of Labour criteria for registered persons which states:

"Knowledge of Statutory Requirements : Submit proof of knowledge on the legislation and relevant health and safety standards applicable to electrical installations by having passed the subject Installation rules as administered by the Department of Higher Education and Training"
